Vanuatu - Telecoms Market Overview & Statistics
Telecom Vanuatu Ltd (TVL) has a monopoly on the provision of all telecommunications services including local, long-distance, international, cellular, leased lines and telex services. Urban areas are well served by modern digital exchanges through a fully underground network, while rural areas remain inadequately serviced. Vanuatu was the first in the Pacific region to pass electronic transaction, e-business, and interactive gaming legislation. In 2002 the analogue cellular network was replaced with a digital GSM 900 system. This has resulted in a more than threefold growth in the number of mobile subscribers. ADSL speeds of up to 1Mb/s are provided through both fixed-line ADSL and WiFi (wireless access). In March 2008 Digicel Pacific launched a GSM network in Vanuatu. Please also note that this report is updated infrequently due to limited availability of information on the local telecoms market.
