    Thailand - Broadband Market
Synopsis Thailand seems to have shrugged off its earlier hesitation about the Internet. There are signs that it is energetically embracing everything online in the marketplace. After a period of heavy dependence on dial-up, the country has finally been making a strong push into broadband services. Most significantly, some of the players have started committing significant capital to build infrastructure. There are also changes afoot in the wireless broadband market as the WiMAX licensing process gains momentum and network rollouts are started. An important start has been made on the restructuring of the regulatory side of the Internet market. Once the government's changes to the regulatory regime start to impact, there should be even greater opportunity for broadband Internet to flourish. This report takes a general look at the Thai broadband Internet market.

    Thailand - Broadcasting
Synopsis The TV broadcasting industry in Thailand continues to wait for the country's proposed new broadcasting regulator to be put in place. Over the last few years, the government has become bogged down in the process of setting up the National Broadcasting Commission, a key element proposed in the Broadcasting Frequencies Act of January 2000. While the country already has a competitive open market, there are numerous issues to be addressed as operators continue to struggle. Issues of convergence with the telecom sector also need attention. This report presents a market overview and some relevant statistics. There is also some information on developments in Thailand's IPTV market.

Thailand - Fixed Networks and Major Operators
Synopsis Fixed-line services were outnumbered by mobile phone services in Thailand by a ratio of around nine to one. Nonetheless, with a teledensity of 11% in 2009, fixed-line services remain an integral part of the telecommunications environment in the country. The Ministry of Information & Communications Technology's effort to promote DSL broadband services initiated in 2004 was to see the start of a potentially enhanced role for the copper network. While reasonably good infrastructure has been put in place to support data communication services, this segment of the market only began to experience significant growth during 2006/07 and by 2009 broadband Internet penetration was still only around 3%. This report provides an overview of voice services in Thailand and looks at some of the sector's major operators.

    Thailand - Internet
Synopsis Thailand has started to energetically embrace Internet in its many forms across the marketplace. Over the last eight years, admittedly starting from a very low base, the estimated number of Internet users in Thailand has increased sixfold. ISPs also seem to be recovering from their earlier reputation for unreliable performance and a failure to invest in improved infrastructure. Now that the government has taken the first steps to fix the regulatory regime, with CAT being sidelined from the activities of the ISPs and, most importantly, the international Internet gateway market having been opened up, there should be increased opportunities for the development of the Internet in Thailand. There is still further work to be done on the regulatory front, however. This report looks at the Thai Internet market and some of the major players involved.

Thailand - Key Statistics, Telecommunications Market and Regulatory Overview
Synopsis This report provides an overview of the telecommunications market in Thailand, together with a selection of the most recent available key indicators for the sector. The country's telecom industry has entered a strong growth phase. The mobile market has been a case in point; growing by substantial amounts annually, it had reached the 100% penetration milestone by mid-2009; although growth had slowed as the economy turned down in 2008/09, there had still been a solid 10% annual rate of expansion in the mobile market during first half of 2009. While the country was getting considerable benefit from a liberalised telecoms sector, there remained much work to be done on regulatory reform. It was broadly perceived that the government was no longer giving telecoms the priority it needed. Sorting out the ongoing role of the two government-owned telcos, for example, remained a major challenge. After many delays, the government had launched the National Telecommunications Commission in 2004. This at least set some reforms in train, but the industry is carefully watching and waiting for the overall direction of the reform process in Thailand.

Thailand - Mobile Communications - Major Operators
This report looks at the operators in the strong Thai mobile market. When two new mobile players - TA-Orange and Hutchison CAT - entered the market to challenge the entrenched duopoly of Advanced Info Service and Total Access Communications, the competition became increasingly vigorous. Two other operators, Thai Mobile and CAT Mobile, also entered the market in a confusing fashion and without much impact. The local mobile sector has seen a sustained period of high competition involving heavy price-cutting as the battle for market share raged. There was likely to be a push for consolidation, especially as the market gets closer to saturation. The government's sectoral reform, once finalised, should also have a major impact on the shape and direction of the market. The matter of government issuing 3G licences had become a prolonged saga - but the end was in sight.

Thailand - Mobile Communications - Market Overview
Synopsis The Thai mobile market continues to grow. By mid-2009 there were 64 million mobile subscribers in the country and penetration was around the 100% mark. The subscriber numbers were up from 30 million in 2005. With the arrival of two additional players in the mobile market - TA Orange (later called True Move) and Hutchison CAT - almost a decade ago, the powerful duopoly of AIS and DTAC was fundamentally challenged as competition began heating up. There was also the launch of Thai Mobile, the TOT/CAT mobile joint venture, over this period. The market is now in need of some rationalisation; regulatory changes will continue to be a big factor in shaping the future market. This means that much will depend on the government and the regulator to make the necessary changes. The commercial rollout of 3G networks will also be watched with great interest. This report presents an overview of the Thai mobile market, including some pertinent statistics.

    Thailand - Telecommunications Infrastructure
Thailand has dedicated a substantial amount of its resources to the building of a national telecommunications infrastructure over the last decade or so. The economic crisis of the late 1990s was certainly a setback to this long term process. Nevertheless, the country has recovered much of the earlier momentum and has been attracting foreign capital and expertise once more to assist in the continuing process of expanding and integrating its networks. This report looks at where the industry is at the moment in terms of infrastructure and reviews the status of the major players involved in the building and the operating of the telecommunications sector.

Thailand - Telecoms Market Trends & Forecasts
Synopsis Despite the need for major structural reform, Thailand's telecom industry has continued on its strong growth path. The mobile market has been particularly strong, expanding by up to 100% a year (almost 100% penetration by end-2008). The long term strategy of Build-Transfer-Operate (BTO) concessions to put fixed-line infrastructure in place has had mixed success. A fresh regulatory approach might provide a much-needed boost. Regulatory changes will also give ISPs the opportunity to develop the Internet market and strengthen the country's move into broadband. This report looks at the fixed-line, mobile and Internet segments of the Thai market and provides scenario forecasts for each of these market segments.
