Asia - Broadband - Development of Power Line Services
The development and deployment of Broadband over Powerlines (BPL) systems and services in Asia has been patchy to say the least. The high technology market leaders in the region, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, have been running pilot systems and trials of various kinds. But there is little evidence of any major commercial roll-out of BPL, apart from one significant deployment reported in Hong Kong. Whilst research into the technology is proceeding, there does not yet appear to be any strong commitment to any large scale operations at an early stage. This report looks at activities associated with BPL development across the Asian region.

Asia - Broadband - Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Services
The broadband Internet access market in Asia has been growing at an annual rate of around 30%. The roll out of broadband services based on Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology has been a major part of this expansion. Exploiting as it does the fixed line copper networks, DSL has been especially popular with the incumbent operators who are seeking to make best use of their legacy infrastructure. This has seen a strong interest in ‘hot-copper' broadband services. Technological development finds ways to better use the copper loop and extend its capability. As a result, we are offered 50Mb/s Very High Data Rate DSL (VDSL). This report looks at the DSL broadband market in Asia.

Asia - Broadband - Fibre to the Home (FttH)
Asia is the one region of the world where Fibre-to-the-Home (FttH) has started to emerge as a serious broadband platform. The technology has taken off in a big way in Japan. There were already over 5.4 million FttH subscribers in Japan by March 2006. Not unexpectedly, the movement towards fibre has been occurring in Asia's more developed markets, where positive government intervention has been playing an important role. However, the adoption rates have varied considerably from market to market. Invariably, FttH has found itself competing with the copper loop as technology continues to extend the capability of this traditional technology. This report presents an overview of the Asian FttH market.

Asia - Broadband - Market Overview
Broadband Internet is one of the fastest growing market segments in Asia. In fact, the region has been leading the world. However, broadband has remained a phenomenon limited to Asia's developed economies, with dial-up narrowband access still being the norm in the developing countries of Asia. Where the market is taking off, both Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and cable modem platforms have both proved popular, with DSL having a clear advantage. DSL has been dominating the world market, with over 67% by early 2006. And Asia has become the leading market in the world for DSL, with almost 40% of the worldwide broadband subscriber base and about 38% of the world's DSL subscribers. This report offers an overview of the Asian broadband market.

Asia - Digital Media - Market Overview & Statistics
A number of years of sluggish global economic conditions weighed heavily on the Asian digital media market in Asia, slowing growth rates. Whilst this was the overall trend across the region, there have been some exceptions, notably in China, India and South Korea, where distributors and platform providers have experienced growth markets. Now the market is lifting generally, as operators introduce new and improved platforms and content. This report provides a general overview of the region's digital media market.

Asia - Digital Media and Convergence
There has been an increasing interest in exploiting the potential synergies between the traditionally separate industries of broadcasting and telecommunications. The push towards convergence, using common infrastructure and architecture has gained more momentum with the huge improvements in technology. This has led the market to actively explore the concept of triple-play services involving the unified provision of TV/video, telephony and Internet services. A number of the more highly developed economies in Asia have been moving into the area of convergent and triple-play networks. This report looks at how both operators and governments in the Asian markets are responding to this challenge.

Asia - Internet
Asia is the world's largest regional Internet market, measured by users. The number of Internet users in the region was estimated to have reached 375 million by mid-2006 out of a total global Internet user population estimated at 662 million. Although the market is starting to change, Internet development in Asia has been dominated for a long time by Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. China has joined this group. The developing economies of the region have had considerably slower growth, having had to deal with high access costs, poor infrastructure and the slow pace of deregulation. This in turn has limited the potential for achieving the social and economic benefits of a country being online. This report provides an overview of the Internet market in Asia.

Asia - IP Networks & VoIP Services
The development of Internet Protocol (IP)-based services and networks across Asia has built up a strong momentum. The expansion of IP-supporting infrastructure, however, has mostly focused on the developed markets and has been heavily dependent on assistance by governments. At the same time, the development of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services leveraging directly off legacy networks has been much more extensive as it has been pushed by numerous telecom operators, from a multitude of entrepreneurial operators right through to the slow moving incumbents. This report looks at progress in the building of IP-networks and the general development of IP based services across Asia.

Asia - Mobile Communications - Market Overview & Statistics
Asia's mobile industry has been one of the largest and fastest-growing markets in the world. By early 2006, we saw the region reach 850 million mobile subscribers (overall regional penetration 23%) and the total subscriber base was still growing at an annual rate of almost 25%. After a period where annual subscriber growth rates were well in excess of 50%, there has been a slowing of growth in recent years, settling to between 20% and 30%. There is still more room for growth. Asia has not only been dynamic in terms of subscriber growth; it has also been a leader in innovation with such products as NTT DoCoMo's i-Mode in Japan and the widespread application of SMS. This report provides an overview of the Asian mobile market including relevant statistics.

South Pacific Islands - Regional Market Overview & Statistics
Penetration rates of telecom services in the South Pacific Island region are still comparatively low, with large differences between urban and rural areas where coverage is usually poor. Access to basic telecom services remains relatively expensive. In 2006 less than half of all Pacific Islanders had a phone and generally only had one supplier for any particular fixed, mobile or Internet service. A. lack of reliable fixed infrastructure combined with cheaper installation costs has enabled mobile services to make significant inroads into the market. Mobile telephony is expected to outpace growth in fixed-line connections as the market moves into 2006 and 2007. New technologies are gaining ground in some island countries: 3G mobile services are expected to be launched in Fiji in 2007. Several of the South Pacific nations are upgrading satellite links to outer islands, installing wireless broadband and upgrading fixed-line broadband capability and some are rolling out high-speed ADSL2+ broadband.
