Jamaica - Telecoms , Mobile and Broadband
Executive summary
BuddeComm's annual publication, ‘Jamaica - Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband', profiles the fixed-line, mobile and broadband markets in Jamaica.
The lack of competition and investment in fixed-line infrastructure and the high mobile penetration rate have left Jamaica's fixed-line teledensity as one of the lowest in the Caribbean.
In contrast, the relative size and rapid expansion of the mobile sector continues to underpin growth in the telecommunications industry. Despite a slowdown in 2009, largely due to the broader recessionary environment, the mobile sector is poised for strong growth between 2010 and 2015 on the back of the launch of new 3G and 4G networks. In particular, mobile broadband is likely to become a major revenue driver with stronger competition emerging between Digicel, Claro and LIME.
This report contains overviews, analyses and statistics of the Jamaican fixed-line, mobile and broadband markets together with information on convergence issues and on the country's fixed line incumbent and major mobile operators.
Market highlights:
In May 2009 Claro completed its nationwide 3G network offering mobile broadband, video calling and interactive gaming.
LIME followed suit a month later with the launch of its HSPA technology-based 3G mobile network, offering download speeds of 3.6Mb/s and feature-rich mobile services.
After securing a licence in the 2.5GHz spectrum, Digicel announced its intention to launch a nationwide WiMAX network by mid-2010. Digicel is also planning to introduce into Jamaica its prepaid digital TV service, which will drive growth in triple play and quadruple play packages.
By early 2010 Digicel had approximately 2 million subscribers in Jamaica, representing around 65% of the mobile market. Both LIME and in particular Claro improved their market shares between 2009 and early 2010. Competition in the sector will be materially improved should mobile number portability, currently being canvassed by the regulator, be introduced.
In mid-2009 the Jamaican government confirmed that it will issue two island-wide subscriber television wireless licences specifically to cable operators. The issuing of these two licences will take to three the number of island-wide cable operators, bringing valuable competition to a market currently dominated by Columbus Communications Networks' Flow.Mobile statistics - 2010
